Time Chapter in Maths for Class 4

Time Chapter in Maths for Class 4, deals with various concepts which are as under:-

  • Convert hours to minutes
  • Convert days to hours
  • Convert minutes to seconds
  • 24 hour to 12 hour Time Conversion
  • 12 hour to 24-hour Time Conversion

Time Chapter in Maths for Class 4 – Convert hours to minutes

Example 1

Convert:
5 hours = ___ minutes

Explanation:

As we know that,
1 hours = 60 minutes
To find 5 hours in minutes. We have to multiply both sides by 5
( 5 x 1 ) hours = ( 5 x 60 ) minutes
5 hours = 300 minutes

Time Chapter in Maths for Class 4 – Convert days to hours

Example 2

Convert:
2 days = ___ hours

Explanation:

As we know that,
1 days = 24 hours
To find 2 days in hours. We have to multiply both sides by 2
( 2 x 1 ) days = ( 2 x 24 ) hours
2 days = 48 hours

Time Chapter in Maths for Class 4 – Convert minutes to seconds

Example 3

Convert:
4 minutes = ___ seconds

Explanation:

As we know that,
1 minutes = 60 seconds
To find 4 minutes in seconds. We have to multiply both sides by 4
( 4 x 1 ) minutes = ( 4 x 60 ) seconds
4 minutes = 240 seconds

Time Chapter in Maths for Class 4 – 24 hour to 12 hour Time Conversion

Example 4

Convert 0700 hours in terms of 12 hours clock time?

Explanation:

0700 hours time is before noon.

In the above time, the first two digits represent hours and last two digits represents minutes.

We would first separate the hours digits (07), from minutes digits (00) by inserting a colon (:) between them

Hence,0700 hours can be written as 07:00

Since the time is before noon, we would add a.m. to the above time, i.e, 07:00 a.m.

Example 5

Convert 1415 hours in terms of 12 hours clock time?

Explanation:

1415 hours shows that the time is after noon.

In the above time, the first two digits represent hours and last two digits represents minutes.

We would first separate the hours digits (14), from minutes digits (15) by inserting a colon (:) between them

Hence, 1415 hours can be written as 14:15

Since we need to write the time in terms of 12 hours clock time, we would convert 14 hours into 12 hour time, by subtracting 12 from 14, i.e, 14-12 = 2

Now we would replace the 14 hours by 2 and since the time is after noon, we would add p.m. to the above time,

i.e, 02:15 p.m.

Take the difference between the number and 12, and replace hours by p.m.

Hence,1415 hours represent 2:15 p.m.

Time Chapter in Maths for Class 4 – 12 hour to 24-hour Time Conversion

Example 6

Convert 09:30 a.m. in terms of 24-hour clock time?

Explanation:

24-hours clock time does not contain a.m. or p.m., after the time. The time begins from midnight which is represent as 0000 hours. The time in 24-hours clock is represented by 4 digits, where, the first two digits represent hours and last two digits represents minutes

After 12 noon we keep counting as 13, 14…… rather than starting with 1 again.

So, to convert time into 24-hour clock if the given time is am then it will be the same in 24-hour clock

If the time is pm, we will add 12 to the given time to convert into 24-hour clock time.

Since, the time is 09:30 a.m., it would be written as 0930 hours in the 24-hours clock time.

Example 7

Convert 01:20 p.m. in terms of 24-hour clock time?

Explanation:

24-hours clock time does not contain a.m. or p.m., after the time. The time begins from midnight which is represent as 0000 hours. The time in 24-hours clock is represented by 4 digits, where, the first two digits represent hours and last two digits represents minutes

After 12 noon we keep counting as 13, 14…… rather than starting with 1 again.

So, to convert time into 24-hour clock if the given time is am then it will be the same in 24-hour clock

If the time is pm, we will add 12 to the given time to convert into 24-hour clock time.

Since, the time is 01:20 p.m. which is after 12 noon, we have to add 12 hours to the given time to convert it into 24-hour clock time

i.e,12 hours + 1 hours = 13 hours

Hence, 01:20 p.m. can be written as 1320 hours
